Fossil Amber Ecosystem with Rare Ship
Timber Beetle
Geological Time: Miocene
Size: 95 mm x 33 mm; 12.5 grams
Fossil Site: Andes Mountains, Colombia
Item: SA101
Price: $250.00
Remarks: This large piece of fossil amber contains some two dozen diverse
insects, including a rare Ship Timber Beetle (labeled in a picture), Melittoma
sp.
from Coleopteran family Lymexylonidae. The amber is essentially a portion
of an ancient rain forest ecosystem, with members exquisitely preserved in
a resin
grave. There are also nine red Ambrosia beetles that earn a living in nutritional
symbiosis with ambrosia fungi, and are members of Coleoptera family Curculionidae.
There are two Alates, the winged, sexual forms of the termite, three flies
(Diptera), and two Hymenopterans (a wasp and an ant). |
