Knithtia alta from Fossil Lake Gosiute |
|
Name:
Knightia
alta
Order Clupeifomes, Family Clupeidae
Age: Eocene
Size: The fossil 4” on a 6 3/4 x 4 1/4” oval plate
Fossil Location: Green River Formation, South West Wyoming
Comments: I was privileged to pick up a small batch of fossil
fish from fossil Lake Gosiute at the 2011 Tucson Mineral and Fossil
Show. This collecting area has been closed to the public for many
years. According to the vendor, these fossil fish came from a
collection dating back to the 1960s. The fossil fish from Lake
Goisute have a different type preservation compared to the more
commonly found “split fish” or “18 inch layer”
fish from Fossil Lake. The Lake Gosiute shales are often dolostones,
limestones, or oil shales. Though the fish in both lakes comprise
the same species, the ones from Lake Goisute have a different
look and presence. They exhibit very good bony detail and a somewhat
ghostly appearance. Their distinctive look makes them instantly
recognizable to the knowledgeable collectors eye. The fossil fish
from Lake Gosiute are also difficult to acquire since the prohibition
of collecting in these beds a few decades ago.
This
particular fish is Knightia alta, a close relative of Knightia
eocaena. Knightia was a schooling fish, which is sometimes found
in mass mortality layers, confined to a single plane, indicative
of a single event. Theories as to the reasons include stratified
water turnovers as well as poisoning due to blooms of blue-green
algae.

Diplomystus dentatus Green River Fish Fossil |
|
Name:
Diplomystus
dentatus
Order: Ellimmichyiformes, Family: Ellimmichthyidae
Age: Eocene
Size: The fish is 3” in length on a 3” x 5”
plate
Fossil Location: Green River Formation, South West Wyoming
Comments: Diplomystus dentatus is the second most common fish
found in the Green River Formation. This one displays phenomenal
detail, wonderful contrast, and almost jumps off the plate.
It is an exceptional fish at a most affordable price. Diplomystus'
morphology, including its upturned mouth is prototypic of a
surface feeding fish. The genus are herrings that likely fed
on small surface dwelling fish as Knightia, is evidenced by
numerous fossils found with Knightia is the stomach or mouth.
The genus Diplomystus is also found to occur in Cretaceous strata
in South America, as well as Cretaceous Lebanon

Collector Grade Hiodon Fossil Fish from the Green River Formation |
|
Name:
Hiodon
falcatus (Mooneye)
Age: Eocene
Size: The fish is 3 3/4” in length on a small plate.
Fossil Location: Green River Formation, Kemmerer, Wyoming

Knightia alta Green River Fish Fossil |
|
Name: Knightia
alta
Age: Eocene
Size: The fish is 4 1/8” in length on a 7 3/4” x 6”
plate.
Location: Green River Formation, Kemmerer, Wyoming
Comments: Knightia alta is the most common fish found in the Green
River Formation. This one displays phenomenal detail, wonderful
contrast, and almost jumps off the plate. It is an exceptional large
size for species fish at a most affordable price. This fish displays
incredible color, considering the fact it is a split fish, not from
the 18" Layer. It is a bit more expensive than your average
split fish Knightia, but, in my humble opinion, well worth the investment.
