Large
Inflated Salterocoryphe Trilobite from Portugal |
|
Name:
Salterocoryphe
saltori
Phylum: Phacopida Family: Calymenidae
Age: Ordovician
Size: The trilobite is 1 7/8” in length on a 3 x 6”
plate.
Fossil Location: Valongo Formation, Covelo, Portugal
Comments: This specimen exhibits all the hallmark attributes of
the best-preserved Valongo trilobites. One is struck immediately
by the exquisite preservation, color and aesthetics of this specimen.
It is fully prone and inflated, resting comfortably on the matrix.
Valongo trilobites are easily recognized by their ghostly appearance.
They are normally compressed, distorted, and the matrix has a
slatey appearance. This formation is a monotonous succession of
marine silty mudrocks transformed into dark slate by low regional
metamorphism.

Ellipsocephalus hoffi Trilobites Mass Mortality Plate |
|
Name:
Ellipsocephalus
hoffi
Age: Middle Cambrian
Size: The trilobites average ½ to 1” in length
on a 3 ½ x 5” plate.
Fossil Location: Jince Formation, lower part ot the Hydrocephalus
lyelli Zone, Czech Republic
Comments: Description: This abundant species could form monotypic
cluster of tens to hundreds of specimens. This plate has 11
complete and many partials. The specimens well defined 3D and
contrast well against a dark background. It’s a very pretty
plate and shows quite well. There are more that 1300 described
species of Barrandian trilobites. An amazing statistic when
you consider the area collected is only a few hundred square
miles. Bohemia is the historical name given to the area of central
Czech Republic where these species are found. Barrandian trilobites
refer to the trilobite fauna found here. The term comes from
the seminal work done by the J. Barrnade (1799-1883) who spent
over half his life describing these trilobites and helping establish
the science of paleontology.

Lonchodomas
drummuckensis Trilobite from the Girvan Starfish Beds of Scotland |
|
Name:
Lonchodomas
drummuckensis
Age: Upper Ordovician
Size: The trilobite is 1 5/8” in length.
Fossil Location: Ashgill Series, Rawtheyan Stage, Drummuck Group,
Aryshire, Scotland
Comments: Presented is rare treat from an old collection that
I managed to acquire. Lonchodomas drummuckensis are from the
classic “Starfish” Beds of Girvan. This location
is now protected and off-limits to any kind of fossil collecting.
This is an excellent quality specimen, only the right genal
spine is missing. (It is highly unusual to find complete specimens
from this site.) It has a dark chocolate color, is inflated
and shows very well. The species is readily identified by the
long nose spine and flaring genals.

Bohemian Trilobite Otarion diffractum |
|
Name:
Otarion
diffractum
Age: Silurian
Size: 9-mm on a 4 x 4-cm plate
Fossil Location: Kopaninske Fm., Kosov, near Beroun, Czech Republic)
Czech Republic
Comments: This species is somewhat rare and I have only received
a few of them. This is my last one to offer. It apparently is
from the Aulacopleuridae family, and closely resembles Aulacopleura
koninckii and comes from the same formation. Note the excellent
preservation including the eyes and long genal spines. To the
upper left is a partial of what appears to be an Odontopleura.

Bizarre Crotalocephalus Moroccan Trilobite |
|
Name:
Crotalocephalus
gibbus
Age: Devonian
Size: The specimen is 7.9 cm (3 1/8”) on a 13.3 x 8.8
cm (5 ¼ x 3 ½”) piece of flat-lying matrix.
Fossil Location: Hamar Laghdad Formation, Djebel Issoumour,
Alnif , Morocco
Comments: Presented is an excellent example of this unusual
and bizarre looking trilobite genus. Take special note of the
highly inflated, pronounced glabella, set in extreme opposition
to the small eyes.
Well preserved example of a member of the Order Phacopida, Family
Cheiruridae with many fine details present. The most diagnostic
features of this taxon are the sharp pleural and pygidial spines
and the distinctive cephalon. The describer of this one thought
it bore a resemblance to the head of a rattlesnake (Crotalus),
hence the genus name. The spines may have aided it in staying
at the surface of the soft seafloor.

Moroccan Oryctocephalidae Trilobite |
|
Name:
Shergoldiella
vincenti (Geyer 2006)
Age: Lower-Middle Cambrian
Size: The trilobite is 7/16” in length on a small plate.
Fossil Location: Lower Jbel Wawrmast Formation
Tarhoucht area, eastern Anti-Atlas, Morocco
Comments: If you have ever attended the Tucson Gem and Fossil
Show, you know how difficult it can be to navigate the many
Moroccan fossil dealers. There are so many fakes and commercial
junk to wade though to find the real relevant fossil treasures.
Here is one that was lying in a cardboard box under a table
in the tent of a quite innocuous Moroccan dealer; far away from
the main hotel showrooms. This
Shergoldiella vincenti is the only known genus of Oryctocephalidae
found in Morocco. Only a few have been discovered. Surely, this
would be a treat for the Moroccan trilobite specialist. It is
quite well preserved, fully prone with a bright rust/orange
patina. It’s the only one I have to offer.

Robust Bolivian Hoekaspis yahuari Trilobite |
|
Name:
Hoekaspis
yahuari (Hoek 1912)
Age: Middle Ordovician
Size: The trilobite is 4” in length.
Fossil Location: Bolivia
Comments: Description: Another fossil that was readily available
about seven years ago has now become rather uncommon. I would
assume the quarry site was exhausted. Most Bolivian fossils
are found in concretions. This one was as well, though, the
negative is lost. Importantly, it retains its free cheeks. Note
the light rust/orange patina covering most of the trilobite.
Most of the Hoekaspis recovered were molts with their free cheeks
missing. This is a high-grade specimen, and is one of only two
I have available.

Name:
Ectillaenus
giganteus
Order: Corynexochida Family:Illaenidae Placoparia tournemini
Order: Phacopida Family: Pliomeridae
Age: Ordovician
Location: Valongo Formation, Covelo, Portugal
Size: (25.4mm=1 inch): The Ectillaenus is 3 1/2” in length,
the Placoparia ¾”. The plate size is 8 5/8 x 5
1/2”
Comments: Valongo trilobites are easily recognized by their
ghostly appearance. They are normally compressed, distorted,
and the matrix has a slatey appearance. This one is part of
a small batch of exceptionally well-preserved specimens that
I recently procured. One is struck immediately by the exquisite
preservation, color and aesthetics of this large two species
association plate. Both the Ectillaenus and Placoparia are fully
prone and inflated, resting comfortably on the matrix. Special
attention needs to be paid to the fact that both specimens show
none of the distortion, crushing and stretching normally associated
with Valongo trilobites.
