Large
Hetromorph Ammonite Crioceras from France |
|
Name:
Crioceras
sp
Ammonoidea, Oxynoticeratidae
Age: Lower Cretaceous, Hauterivian Stage (~133 million years ago)
Size: The Crioceras is 2 ¾” in diameter on a flat
standing base.
Fossil Location: Vocantian Basin, Buis les Baronnes, Drome, Francee
Comments:This is a fine example of an ammonite of the genus Crioceras
of the Hauterivian Stage (135 m.y.a) deposits of France. It has
what is known as heteromorphic shape. While most ammonites have
spiral shells that retain the same shape throughout growth (homomorph),
a major group of ammonites, the Ancyloceratina,
emerged during the Late Jurassic, which had uncoiled shells instead,
and were called herteromorph ammonites (different-shaped). As
all ammonites, these went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous.
Complete hetromorphs are rare and among the most desirable of
finds for ammonite collectors. France is home to a number of species
of lovely and graceful hetromorphs.

Peruvian Black Beauty Prolylleceras Ammonite |
|
Name:
Prolylleceras
sp. Ammonite
Age: Cretaceous
Size: The ammonite is 3 ¾” in diameter.
Location: Huanzala, Peru.
Description: Prolylleceras specimens are a deep metallic black
with outstanding robust ribbed whorls and overall aesthetics.
Five rows of nodes are aligned along the keel. Both sides are
fully preserved. This is a large fully adult specimen. The larger
of the two I have to offer.
This fossil
comes from the George Lee Collection of Southern California. Mr.
Lee accumulated a virtual where house of fossils over thirty-five
years of self-collecting and purchasing. Most of the fossils were
acquired during the 1960s through the mid 1990s. Unfortunately,
for we collectors, many of these sites and areas are no longer
available for collecting. Therefore, many of my offerings are
of special importance, as they are now rarely available to the
public. Since Mr. Lee’s death, a few years ago, the collection
has slowly been liquidated.
This fossil came from one of the last available batches sold.

Mexican Ammonite Idoceras – Old Collection |
|
Name:
Idoceras
cf balderum Ammonite
Age: Upper Jurassic
Size: (25.4mm=1 inch): The ammonite is 3 3/8” in diameter.
Location: Western Sierra Nevada, Mexico
Comments: As far as I can tell, this was collected in Mexico in
the 1960-70s. It came from a major collection liquidation I bought
parts of about six years ago. Mexico’s current policy totally
restricts the export of any fossils. This is a specialist collector
treat, and the only one I have to sell.
