Impressionistic
Peanut Wood Petrified Round |
|
Name:Peanut
Wood – a few varieties of wood including conifers
Conifer Division: Pinophyta
Age: Cretaceous
Size (25.4mm=1 inch): The round is 8 ½” x 6 ¼”
Fossil Location: Windalia Radiolarite, Kennedy Range, Western
Australia
Comments: Peanut wood has a unique history. During the Cretaceous,
the wood was washed into the ocean as driftwood. There a shellfish
bivalve called Teredo, which bore into the wood, attacked it.
When the wood became waterlogged it settled into the bottom
of the ocean, got covered with mud and began the process of
petrification. The white markings are the boreholes of the shellfish.
The wood generally is black with the boreholes white. It is
strikingly attractive, with a modern appearance, like an abstract
impressionistic work of art.

Tiatea Petrified Fern Tree Polished Round |
|
Name:
Tiatea singulari
Conifer Division: Pteridophyta
Age: Permian
Size (25.4mm=1 inch): The fern round is 6” in diameter
Fossil Location: Araguaina Petrified forest, Babaculandia, Maranhao
Province, Brazil
Comments: Beautiful and fascinating, the Tiatea fern rounds
are quite different from modern hard wood rounds. Note the shades
of pink, brown, off–whites and outer bark. The front is
highly polished, the backside finely cut, not polished. In cross
section, tree fern stems consisted of a narrow cylinder composed
of vascular tissue. Enclosing this cylinder was a mantle of
petioles and aerial roots, which created a fibrous, tough, lightweight
structure Tietea is the stem of a marattialean tree fern from
the Permian of Brazil much like Psaronius. In cross-section
the two tree ferns have the same basic structure, but they can
be distinguished. Whereas the vascular tissue is in strands
at the center of the Psaronius stem the vascular tissue in the
center of Tietea is found as round, ovoid, or C-shaped bundles

Comments: The petrified wood common to this area of Australia
is known as 'Chinchilla Red' because of its unique color and
