Green
river Fm. Comose Seed and Climbing Fern Association |
|
Name:
Comose Seed and Lygodium kaulfussii
Age: Eocene
Size (25.4mm=1 inch):The Climbing Fern is 3 ¼” in
length and the Comose seed is ½” in length
Fossil Location: Mahajanga, Madagascar
Comments: The Climbing Fern is 3 ¼” in length and
the Comose seed is ½” in length. Fossil Location:
Parachute Creek Member, Green River Formation, Bonanza Area, Utah.
Comments: Here is an interesting and rare association of a large
partial Climbing Fern Leaf, and Comose Seed. Comose seeds are
distinguished by their tufts of hair, like those of the cotton
plants, which allow for wide dispersal. This is a nice find for
the specialist collector of Green River fossil flora.

Exquisite
Populus wilmattae (Poplar) Green River Leaf |
|
Name:
Populus wilmattae (poplar)
Age: Eocene
Size (25.4mm=1 inch):The leaf is 3 1/8 in length including the
stem
Fossil Location: Parachute Creek Member, Green River Formation,
Bonanza Area, Utah
Comments: This is a beautifully detailed, colorful Poplar leaf.
Note the excellent venation and long fully complete petiole. An
unidentified smaller leaf with an insect bite rests along the
left side of the primary specimen. The Green River Formation holds
one of the world’s richest depositories of fossil leaves,
plants, vines and aquatic vegetation. My provider alone shows
over seventy species he collects. Surely there are many more to
found. Not only is the variety of plant life phenomenal, the preservation
is often superb. The Green River fossils I am offering are collected
with the permission of the property owner on privately held land.

Ginko dissecta Tranquile Shale Leave |
|
Name:Ginkgo
dissecta
Age: Early Middle Eocene
Size (25.4mm=1 inch): The fossil leaf is 1 1/16 x 1 ¼”
on a 2 ½ x 3” plate
Fossil Location: McAbee Fossil Beds, Tranquille Shale, Cache
Creek, British Columbia, Canada
Comments: The Ginkgophyta probably originated about the same
time as the Cycads during the late Paleozoic, with fossils
found in North America until the Miocene. The fan-shaped leaves
of most members are quite distinctive. This one is atypical,
with deeply dissected leaves with 4 lobes that are further divided,
making the derivation of the specific name obvious. Gingko biloba
is the only extant member. The flora was dominated by conifers
farther away from the lake, and elm, birch, beech, and alder
near to the lakeshore. This specimen is a fine example of a
ginko leave from the lacustrine deposits of the McAbee Flora
of the Eocene of British Columbia, Canada with fine preservational
details. A shallow lake dominated the region. Plant matter which
fell into the water was covered with a fine layer of silt, which
built up over the years as a result of deposition of diatoms,
which bloomed in the lake each spring and died in the summer.
